Maximizing Room ExposureMay 17, 2024
Room exposure is crucial for attracting players to create an engaging room, as factors like popular themes, room thumbnails, room tags, and availability on all platforms influence content discovery.
Ensure your room thumbnail matches the theme with a clear, large title. Additionally, optimize room tags, titles, and descriptions for enhanced visibility and better content recommendations.

Popular ThemesWhen initially creating an experience or updating a room theme, consider incorporating fun, trending content. Don’t integrate other people’s intellectual property (IP), but do embrace popular art styles and activities that resonate with what people are currently excited about in the world. Most IP you should avoid will be copyrights (characters, works of art, stories, etc.) and trademarks (brand names like Nintendo, Barbie, etc.). Learn more about Intellectual Property(IP).
  • Consider using seasonal themes. You could create a room with a tropical beach theme during the summer months or a spooky haunted house theme around Halloween.
  • Using popular, iconic themes can certainly boost your room's visibility and attract fans, but it can also infringe on intellectual property. Instead of copying a popular franchise, consider using art styles inspired by the IP, crafting your own story, and introducing different characters. This approach makes your game more original and reduces the risk of facing IP enforcement.
    • A good example of this is steering away from directly copying series like "Zelda" or "Star Wars." Instead, create a new game with similar themes of exploration, puzzle-solving, and heroic quests. That way, you can attract fans from those genres without directly copying them. That way, you present your or your team's original idea, which can't be taken down due to IP issues.
    • Childhood games are also fun and are not restricted by intellectual property (IP). Some of our popular games revolve around role play, hide-and-seek, tag, capture the flag, and the floor is lava. They are great to utilize in games, as many players are familiar with them, as long as they do not infringe on IP.
    • If you’re not using a third party’s IP, Rec Room can support and sponsor your room in media and events, further promoting your creation, which gives your room more visibility
  • To discover popular room examples, explore the room leaderboards on rec.net.

  • Relying on players to scroll down to read the room description isn't reliable. Your thumbnail is your primary opportunity to captivate your audience—make the most of it by showcasing the fun of your game!
  • When making thumbnails, keep it simple. Focus on your logo, display your name, highlight key settings, characters, or action/gameplay. You don't have to include all of them; successful thumbnails often blend these elements. Sometimes, just picking two areas to emphasize can make a thumbnail look great.
    • When creating thumbnails, check how they are displayed on the watch, room details page, room search, and on rec.net.
  • Consider updating your thumbnail slightly with graphics displaying "New," "Updates," and "Rewards" to help raise awareness among fans and draw them back in.
  • Incorporate fun, respectful memes, or popular lingo to help draw in players, but ensure they still represent your room experiences.
  • Consider using popular themes (spooky, spring, holidays) or art styles to help draw in players. Try simple color or image backgrounds to make your titles and the focused content stand out.
  • If there's a big theme happening in Rec Room, consider adding it to your thumbnail and incorporating some of it into your room experience. Players get hyped when there are multiple experiences related to a big Rec Room event, showcase, or themes.
  • If your creative team has a club, consider incorporating the brand colors and logos within the thumbnail to help increase awareness of your team's rooms.

Utilizing tags: consider adding tags that represent your room so that players can get recommended content and find your room when they search for key interests.
  • Consider using at least one default tag slot, such as pvp or hangout, and perhaps adding a more unique yet still generally searchable tag that perfectly aligns with your content. This could greatly enhance discoverability and engagement with your creations.
  • You can add and change tags in your room “Main Settings”

  • Intuitive on all platforms: Designing experiences that are intuitive across all platforms can enhance room visibility. Supporting multiple platforms allows more players to enjoy the experience and invite friends who may be on different platforms.
    • If your room is compatible with all platforms, you'll receive better watch placement on more platforms, which will increase the exposure of your room.
